Salesforce is a must-have business tool. This software gives you the possibility to save your clients' information in a database and manage most of your processes from one single interface. However, you need to use the right Salesforce phone number format in order to start phone calls from this interface.
You need to access the User Interface to choose the right
settings for your phone numbers. You can enter phone numbers via the API but
will not be able to change the settings for these fields. You also need to set
the right locale the first time you launch Salesforce.
Salesforce works with different formats for phone numbers.
In fact, the format you enter the first time you save a phone number will be
automatically detected and preserved. If you save a phone with nine digits, it
will be saved as is. If you enter a phone number with ten digits, it will also
be saved without formatting.

Saving a phone number with eleven digits, the exact Salesforce phone number format depends on
what the first digit is. If the first digit is 1, the by default format will
switch to a ten digit format and the 1 at the beginning of the phone number
will disappear.
If you save an eleven digit phone number that does not start
with 1, Salesforce will automatically save the phone number as is with the
eleven digits.
This applies if you have set United States or Canada as your
locale in Salesforce. As long as you have one of these two locales saved in
Salesforce, any phone number that starts with a 1 will be automatically saved
without this first digit. If you have another locale saved in Salesforce, the 1
at the beginning of your phone numbers will be preserved.
The ten and eleven digit phone numbers you enter in
Salesforce will be saved with a hyphen and parentheses. If you enter 8005553333
in Salesforce, this phone number will be saved as (800) 555-3333.
You can use the + sign to get different Salesforce phone
number format. Entering this + sign before a phone number indicates that you
would like to preserve the original formatting and the parentheses and hyphens
will not be added. You should use this sign for longer phone numbers since the
hyphen and parentheses formatting might not be correct.

You definitely need to set some best practices for entering
phone numbers in Salesforce. This software is designed to automatically
interpret the phone numbers you enter and save them with the correct
formatting. You should provide basic training to all the employees who use
Salesforce to make sure they know how to save phone number with the correct
formatting and know when to use the + sign.
If a phone number saved in Salesforce does not work, the
first thing you need to do is check the Salesforce phone number format. Using
the + sign or failing to use it when needed could be the reason behind a phone
number that doesn't work. Setting some best practices to save phone numbers in
Salesforce should reduce these mistakes.
